New Delhi: Amid reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) spreading in China, a senior Indian health official has urged the public not to panic.
Dr. Atul Goel, an official from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), emphasized the importance of general precautions against all respiratory infections.
“There is no need to be alarmed about the current situation,” Dr. Goel stated.
Doctors have noted that there is no specific antiviral treatment available for HMPV.
Making prevention the most effective way to control its spread.
“There have been reports about the emergence of the Metapneumovirus in China. I want to clarify this matter,” said Dr. Goel.
He explained that the Human Metapneumovirus is similar to other respiratory viruses that cause the common cold.
However, it may lead to flu-like symptoms in the elderly and young children.
We have analyzed data related to respiratory illnesses in the country.
The data for December 2024 shows no significant rise, and no large clusters of cases have been reported from any of our institutions, he added.
Dr. Goel noted that during the winter season, respiratory infections typically increase.
Hospitals are generally well-prepared with sufficient supplies and beds to handle such outbreaks.
“The public should adhere to basic precautions against respiratory infections,” he advised.
“For instance, if someone has a cough or cold, they should avoid close contact with others to prevent spreading the infection.”
Using a separate handkerchief or towel while coughing and sneezing, and taking routine medications for cold and fever, is advisable.
Beyond that, there is no cause for concern at present, Dr. Goel reassured.
He also mentioned that the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, is closely monitoring respiratory illnesses and seasonal influenza cases while staying in coordination with international agencies.
