Chennai: Virat Kohli showcased his champion spirit to lead the Indian team to a remarkable six-wicket victory over Australia in their World Cup opener in Chennai.

Kohli’s masterful 85 not only rescued India from a precarious position but also made the 200-run target appear easily attainable on a challenging pitch.

He found a reliable partner in KL Rahul, who remained unbeaten on 97 off 115 balls during their match-winning partnership of 165 runs. This partnership was particularly crucial as three Indian top-order batsmen were dismissed without scoring.

The Indian spinners, led by Ravindra Jadeja (3/28 in 10 overs), played a significant role in restricting Australia to 199 in 49.3 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin (2/34 in 10 overs) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/42 in 10 overs) complemented Jadeja’s efforts.

Bowler’s Remarkable Play

However, the early stages of the match were challenging for India, with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood taking early wickets, leaving India at 2/3. Kohli’s resilience and elegant shots, particularly a drive past Hazlewood, signaled India’s fightback.

Kohli’s luck played a part when a mistimed pull shot off Hazlewood was dropped by Mitchell Marsh, offering him a lifeline. Kohli and Rahul focused on rebuilding the innings with singles and twos, demonstrating their fitness and composure.

Kohli’s innings included 61 runs scored through singles and doubles, highlighting his ability to rotate strike efficiently. Rahul, who often faces criticism for missed opportunities, displayed his class by matching Kohli stroke for stroke.

He showcased a wide array of shots, including late cuts, back cuts, and extra cover drives. Rahul’s unbeaten 97, including eight fours and two sixes, sealed the win for India. In the bowling department, Jadeja’s intimate knowledge of the Chepauk track, proved invaluable.

He used the slow pitch and subtle variations to his advantage, dismissing key Australian batsmen like Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Jadeja’s clever variations troubled Smith, who was consistently attempting to protect his pads from potential leg-before dismissals.

In a crucial moment, Jadeja bowled a slower delivery that turned more than expected, leading to Smith’s dismissal. Overall, India’s victory was a testament to Kohli’s leadership, Rahul’s resilience, and Jadeja’s bowling prowess on a challenging pitch. This win provided a strong start for India in the World Cup and showcased their ability to overcome adversity.
