Lahore: Diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan have strained their cricketing relations, leading to a decade-long hiatus in bilateral cricket series between the two nations.
Amid this backdrop, speculation is rife about whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025.
Also, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that the decision will ultimately depend on government directives, leaving uncertainty about the Indian team’s participation in Pakistan.
In this context, former Pakistani spinner Danish Kaneria has made intriguing comments. He suggested that the Indian team should avoid traveling to Pakistan and proposed that the tournament be held in a hybrid model in Dubai instead.
In an interview with ‘Sports Talk,’ Kaneria emphasized, “Considering the current situation in Pakistan, I believe the Indian team should not travel there.
Pakistan should consider this, and the final decision will rest with the ICC. I think the tournament should be held in a hybrid model, with matches played in Dubai.
This way, we would also gain media attention. The tournament is likely to be a hybrid model.” Kaneria stressed that player safety should be the top priority, followed by respect.
He expressed confidence that the BCCI would make the necessary efforts and that a consensus would be reached among all involved nations.
Reflecting on the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kaneria noted that the situation in India was much better, which made it easier for the Pakistan cricket team to visit for the event.
He highlighted that hosting the tournament in Pakistan could pose financial challenges and that discussions are ongoing regarding the Indian team’s potential visit.
Kaneria pointed out that if the Indian team does visit Pakistan, it would likely boost sponsorships and media coverage.
However, he also acknowledged the security concerns, suggesting that the situation may not be entirely favorable.
