New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has set a new benchmark in cricket by becoming the first captain to lead a team to the finals of all four ICC tournaments.

This achievement surpasses the record of former captain MS Dhoni, who won three ICC trophies—the T20 World Cup (2007), ODI World Cup (2011), and Champions Trophy (2013).

However, Dhoni never had the opportunity to compete in the World Test Championship (WTC), which was introduced after his retirement from Test cricket.

Virat Kohli was the first Indian captain to lead the team to a WTC final, but Rohit has now completed the full set of ICC tournament finals.

India’s victory against Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal on Tuesday secured their place in the final, making them the first team to reach five Champions Trophy finals—a record no other team has achieved.

Since taking over as India’s full-time captain in February 2022, Rohit has guided the team to every ICC final over the last three years, making him the only captain in history to accomplish this feat.

Under Rohit’s leadership, India reached the WTC final in 2023 but suffered a 209-run defeat.

Later that year, the team made it to the ODI World Cup 2023 final undefeated, only to lose against Australia.

However, they bounced back in the T20 World Cup 2024, winning the title for the first time since 2007 with an unbeaten campaign.

With the Champions Trophy being the last ICC event missing from his list, Rohit made history in Dubai by leading India to the final.

His fearless captaincy and sharp tactics helped India take revenge on Australia, knocking them out of the tournament.

Chasing a 265-run target, Virat Kohli played a crucial innings, scoring 84 off 98 balls, while Shreyas Iyer (45 off 62) provided valuable support.

This successful chase set a new record for India’s highest run chase against Australia in an ICC event, surpassing their 261-run chase in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final.

With this latest accomplishment, Rohit Sharma has further strengthened his legacy as one of India’s greatest captains.
