New Delhi: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time) on Friday, followed by a 6.8 magnitude aftershock.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Local media have confirmed at least 20 fatalities so far.

The tremors were felt across the region, affecting parts of Thailand, China, India, and Bangladesh.

Bangkok, Thailand, experienced strong shocks, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend metro and rail services.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency in the capital and convened an emergency meeting to address the crisis.

In China’s Yunnan province, authorities reported a magnitude of 7.9, while milder tremors were recorded in Kolkata and Manipur (India), Dhaka, and Chattogram (Bangladesh).

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with the affected regions, stating that India is prepared to provide any necessary assistance.

“Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone,” he said, instructing emergency teams to stay on standby.

Videos from impacted areas show buildings shaking violently, with people rushing to safety.

A skyscraper under construction in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district collapsed, leaving 43 workers trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency teams work to recover those affected.

Authorities are still evaluating the extent of damage and casualties across the region.
